The Schlecks are riding the Tour de France

The Trek Factory Racing team have announced that both The Schlecks (Frank) and The Schlecks (Andy) will be riding the Tour this year. As far as I can tell, the reasoning seems to be ‘because we haven’t really got anybody else’.

Frank’s selection is fair enough. He has shown mediocre form all season long and even managed sixth place in an oddly star-free Critérium International. Andy though? Andy’s palmares basically ends in 2011 when he came second in the Tour de France. Since then, no wins, no podiums, no nothing. He came 29th in the Tour de Suisse last week and that appears to have been good enough to get him a job as a domestique who won’t be able to carry many bidons because he’s so scrawny.

In rather more meaningful Trek team news, Fabian Cancellara will be riding and will doubtless be targeting the cobbled stage. Pleasingly, there’s also room for Jens “Shut Up Legs” Voigt – 42 years young and riding his 17th Tour de France in a row. He couldn’t win a stage, could he? We can but dream.
