I’m slightly annoyed at myself for not explicitly tipping Diego Ulissi for yesterday’s stage, despite having said that he might be worth watching this season. Or could I just say that the instruction to watch him still stood? Yeah, that’s right. I’d already tipped him back in January so you can’t have your money back.
What happened?
The 20-odd riders who finished in the front group were pretty much all climbers, but Ulissi could stay with them and then still sprint. That was the gist of it.
It seemed to have been decided that Edvald Boasson Hagen would be Sky’s representative at the finish, so unfortunately Ben Swift had worked for him and wasn’t in the mix. The other rider I picked out yesterday, Michael Matthews, did manage to get in amongst it all, but was clearly struggling with the pace and could only manage sixth. Of the main contenders, Cadel Evans looked good finishing second. Cadel always seems to use a comedy giant gear in these finishing sprints. It makes him look like he’s barely moving, but he surged past almost everyone.
Stage six
Not entirely dissimilar to stage five, but it’s a longer day – a whopping 247km – and a longer final climb. This should mean it’ll mainly be the overall contenders battling it out, but Ulissi’s certainly in with a shout as well.
