Next week on this website…

Let’s mange baguettes, quaff vin rouge and have ourselves a bit of a Tour de France preview to get ourselves in the mood for the biggest race of the year which gets underway in Corsica on Saturday June the 29th.

What kind of preview?

You can expect the following:

  • A look at the main contenders for the general classification
  • A look at the main contenders for the points classification
  • Profiles of Chris Froome’s Team Sky team-mates
  • Details of some of the most significant stages
  • The best ways to follow the race

In the meantime, why not spend some time looking at pictures of hairpins, sunflowers and so forth?

  1. Tour de France on the Radio might be a less appealing side project:
There was a decent summary of 100 years of the Tour on Radio 4 the other day, still available on iPlayer

    1. edit: it was 5 Live actually.

    2. Thanks Pete. I’ll give that a listen.

I see Wiggins has gone from aiming to win the Giro and the Tour to retirement in a fortnight.

Did you notice the tired attempt to stir up more Froome/Wiggins bullshit by completely misquoting Froome in his recent interview?

    1. I think (1) he’s suffering the mother of all comedowns this year and (2) he’s a pretty big guy who isn’t really all that suited to climbing. It takes extraordinary motivation for him to get into the right physical condition for a Grand Tour. Not just the fitness, but the weight as well. Add in the family stuff and I don’t think he’s got it in him to try and recreate something that almost certainly won’t feel as good second time around.

Weight’s insignificant on most time trial courses, so he might revert to specialising in something he’s more naturally suited to. William Fotheringham suggests he might have a stab at Paris-Roubaix, which sort of makes sense, although he’s always seemed silkily efficient rather than powerful and power’s really what you need for the cobbles.

Didn’t see the misquote. Is it in the Guardian interview? I read that.

They had an article with the headline “Froome ‘relief’ at end of Wiggins scrutiny”. Froome’s first line in the linked video: “I wouldn’t say relieved is the right word.”.

      2. Brilliant. That’s the art of the headline, right there.
