Moustaches and flying bikes at Gent-Wevelgem

It was a sprint finish with about 40 riders in the front group. John Degenkolb’s moustache won. Here’s a picture of it. That’s John Degenkolb immediately behind the moustache and then Peter Sagan in the background. Sagan came third, with Arnaud Démare, who won the overblown RideLondon–Surrey Classic last year, finishing second.

One man who might have beaten Degenkolb in a sprint was André Greipel, but he fell victim to a weird crash. According to the Lotto team manager, Marc Sergeant:

“Riders crashed behind André, but a bike that catapulted through the air hit André and so he crashed.”

As if bike racing isn’t dangerous enough, you also have to watch out for the vehicles doubling as projectiles.

What’s next?

It’s the second monument of the season, the Tour of Flanders on Sunday. It’s such a big deal that I might even do a preview later in the week.
