Ryder Hesjedal has problems

After yesterday’s time trial, I said that Ryder Hesjedal was a big loser. Today I’m saying he has problems. What is it about the Canadian that makes me talk like I’m in Mean Girls?

The defending champion lost over a minute to his rivals on stage nine. He looked rocky in the time trial and maybe he emptied himself, because it was a simple case of not being able to hack the pace on a climb. That’s not the kind of thing you shrug off in a stage race.

Bradley Wiggins also has problems, although his seem to be mostly in his head. Yet again, he lost touch with the main group on a descent, falling a minute behind at one point. He caught up, but Wiggo’s wet weather willies are proving a real handicap.

Of the other riders I’ve been writing about, Carlos Betancur gained about 30 seconds, but five minutes down overall, he’s basically out of the running already. Oddly, Domenico Pozzovivo didn’t lose any time, even though there was downhill, wet weather and other cyclists – none of which he likes.
