Marcel Kittel’s poor form is definitely over

2016 Giro, stage two

This is very, very obvious. 2015 was a write-off for Marcel Kittel due to illness, stress and an endless fruitless quest to chase down some half-decent form. In 2016, it’s everyone else who’s doing the chasing.

Stage two seemed pretty straightforward for him. The German’s Etixx – Quick-Step team-mates chose their moment to drag him towards the front, he hovered where he wanted to be and then, when he sprinted, even drafting couldn’t help his rivals stay with him.

It was a man who is very quick at sprinting displaying a very obvious ability to cycle more quickly than everyone else.

Stage three

Because of a time bonus on the line, Kittel is now just one second behind race leader Tom Dumoulin. Another sprint finish seems highly likely. If he’s in the mix, another Kittel win is a distinct possibility. Possibly even a probability.

  1. With hindsight, I should definitely have gone with a ‘Marcel Kittel’s back’ headline.

    Maybe tomorrow.
