I haven’t really formed a strong opinion about Cadel Evans yet, even though he won the 2011 Tour and is one of the favourites this year. About the only thing I ever think when I see him is: “Your head doesn’t match your body.”
Evans doesn’t have a cyclist’s head. He looks like he should be big and burly, but he’s 5ft 9in and 10st 6lbs piss wet through. This is cheating. His rivals might look at his face and not take him seriously in the mountains.
Another major issue with Evans is that he’s Australian. As a cricket writer, I spend a large proportion of my life willing Australian athletes to fail. You can’t overcome that kind of conditioning just because you’re watching a completely different sport.
In summary, I’m probably not supporting Cadel Evans, but this isn’t a firmly-held position.
